In the last year my husband Tom and I made a decision together to eat better food. At that time we were living in Colorado and that was the trendy thing to do with Whole Foods on almost every corner. But, since we have moved to Lincoln, NE, eating healthy is definitely not the trend here. Nevertheless, Tom and I have continued our quest to eat food that is good for our body.
We initially started with cutting out all fast food from our diet. This was an easy choice if you have ever seen the documentary Super Size Me. Our next step was cutting out excess sugar, fat and salt from our diet. Again, relatively simple for us. Then I decided that I really wanted to start eating only natural, organic, non genetically modified (non-GMO), cage-free/free range, foods. When I asked Tom about this decision he was immediately on board. Since this decision we have also watched a few documentaries on food in America. Where it comes from, how it's made, etc. and the information has been shocking. I would recommend everyone to watch the documentary Food Inc. and seriously look at the food you are eating. Highly processed, added preservatives, artifical flavors, high fructose corn syrup, aspertame, and inhumanly treated animals are the norm in almost all of the food in the grocery stores. And the sad part is that Americans turn a blind eye and choose to keep this food coming. My husband and I are two people that are taking a stand and saying, "NO MORE!" We want to know where are food comes from. We want to know how it's made, what's in it, and take the guessing game out of is it safe for me? There are so many recalls of food daily it's staggering. E-coli, salmonella, and those are the smaller bacteria. Unfortunately, these bacteria claim the lives of people every day, and it's unfortunately children and the elderly that suffer. A mother lost her 4 year old to hamberger that the FDA did not catch with E-coli. Her son died 12 days later. Now she is fighting for a law, Kevin's Law, so that the government does a better job on keeping food safe. But why play a guessing game when you can choose natural, organic food from smaller farms who feed their animals better and treat them humanely. We also want to support the farmers who choose not to use genetically modified seed to grow their wheat, corn, soybeans, etc. Why should they have to use genetically modified seed when they can use non-GMO? Because it's all about money to large coorporations. Choose non-GMO for health and for supporting farmers.
Tom and I have a six month old son. Guess what? When he starts eating food he will have only natural, organic, fresh, non-GMO food. We will shop at farmers markets, we will not eat fast food, we will not drink soda, we will support smaller organic companies, we will be SMART and INFORMED shoppers. We will think about where our food comes from before we put it in our mouth.
Every single one of us has a voice and a vote on the food we eat. If we choose by buying high fat, salt, and artifical food they will give us that. But, if we choose natural, organic, non-GMO food, they will have to start giving us good food. We as consumers are powerful. We have the ability to change the food in American for the good. Become more informed consumers by looking at the food labels and reading ingredients. Decided to choose organic, non-GMO, natural food. We owe it to our health! American is the fattist nation, the most unhealty, the highest cholesterol and obesity rates! Change it by starting with yourself today.
If you would like to have a support system please feel free to use my husband and I as yours. Together we can learn and become informed about the food we eat.
